Chalkboard care tips from Chalk'let

We were recently featured on Sakura Haruka where we provided some tips on keeping your chalkboard in good condition, especially in humid Singapore.

Chalkboard Care Tips

1. It is best to prepare a new chalkboard before use. To do so, lay a new piece of chalk flat on its side and use it to rub over the entire surface of the chalkboard. Next, use a dry cloth to erase the residual chalk dust from the board. This will leave a residual layer of chalk dust which will act as a dry lubricant, preventing permanent etchings being made on the chalkboard's surface.

2. When erasing chalk markings, use a soft cloth to wipe the chalkboard surface to prevent scratching.

3. Use a damp cloth to clean the chalkboard surface regularly. This is especially important for people who are allergic or sensitive to dust. For a better cleaning effect, you could also try adding some vinegar into a bucket of warm water, and wet your cloth in it before cleaning the chalkboard surface.

4. Liquid chalk tends to be harder to clean off, especially if the markings have been on the chalkboard for a long period of time. A good way to clean liquid chalk marks off a chalkboard is to use an ammonia-based liquid cleaner {most glass surface cleaners contain ammonia}.

Chalkboards and dragons

The Dragon Playground in Toa Payoh was the location for our first ever photoshoot. It's one of the oldest (been around since 1973!) and most distinctive playgrounds in Singapore, and we thought that it would be a suitable place to take a set of photos that were representative of what we wanted our chalkboards to stand for - something which despite having been around for a long time, retains its charm to the present day.

The objective of the shoot was to capture our products in an outdoor environment.  After a slow start, we began to get the hang of things and eventually managed to get quite a few good shots. Here are some of the pictures we took that day:

All in all, it was a good day for us!
"Once they all believed in dragons
When the world was fresh and young,
We were woven into legends,
Tales were told and songs were sung,
We were treated with obeisance,
We were honored, we were feared,
Then one day they stopped believing -
On that day, we disappeared.
Now they say our time is over
Now they say we've lived our last,
Now we're treated with derision
Where we once ruled unsurpassed.
We must make them all remember,
In some way we must reveal
That our spirit lives forever -
We are dragons!  We are real!"
