A little known secret to protecting the surface of your new chalkboard is that chalkboard surfaces need to be seasoned before use. Writing on a new chalkboard surface before it is seasoned often results in the first drawings  leaving permanent marks even after they have been erased.

And just how do you season a new chalkboard?

Well, it turns out that it's a remarkably simple and quick process. All you have to do is to use the long edge of a piece of chalk and rub it over the entire surface of your new chalkboard as in the picture below.

After the entire chalkboard surface is fully covered with chalk, simply erase the chalk from the surface of your chalkboard and your new chalkboard is seasoned!

This simple process spreads a thin layer of chalk into the "pores" of your chalkboarded surface, allowing future drawings to be easily erased :)
